Coats 1500 Balancer Basic Functions

The Coats 1500 Balancer is designed to provide an efficient and precise wheel balancing experience. This model includes essential features such as imbalance displays, dual technician mode, weight application adjustments, and advanced calibration functions to improve accuracy and ease of use.

Understanding the Imbalance Display

The Coats 1500 Balancer provides real-time imbalance readings through its three display windows:

  • The Inboard window shows the amount of imbalance on the inboard plane.
  • The Center window displays the total static forces in the wheel and tire assembly.
  • The Outboard window indicates the corrective weight needed to balance the outboard plane.

Dual Technician Mode

This feature allows two technicians to work on different vehicles using the same balancer. It stores width and diameter settings separately for each technician, enabling quick recall of individual setups. The active technician is indicated by a light under either A or B.

Weight Application Selection

The balancer provides flexible weight placement options. The technician can select where the weights will be placed:

  • Clip-on weights for both inboard and outboard positions.
  • Tape weights for precision balancing.
  • A combination of clip-on and tape weights depending on wheel requirements.

Adjusting Wheel Dimensions

The balancer allows manual entry of wheel dimensions if the A and D arm or sonar function is not used. To adjust dimensions:

  • Press D to manually set the wheel diameter (ranging from 8 to 30 inches).
  • Enter the desired number using the keypad.

Automated Weight Indexing

The balancer can automatically move the wheel to the correct weight placement location. By pressing the Next button, the wheel is indexed to either the inboard or outboard plane for precise weight application.

Switching Between Balancing Modes

Technicians can toggle between different balancing modes:

  • Dynamic mode: Balances both planes of the wheel.
  • Static mode: Applies weight to a single plane.

Behind-the-Spoke Weight Placement

For aesthetic purposes, the Coats 1500 Balancer allows weights to be hidden behind wheel spokes.

  • Behind the Spoke Mode positions adhesive weights discreetly.
  • Spoke Marking Feature helps align weight placement by identifying spoke positions.

Stopping and Resetting the Balancer

The Stop/Exit function halts the balancing process, allowing the technician to remove and replace the wheel before measuring a new one.

Advanced Calibration Functions

The balancer includes advanced calibration features for precise results:

  • Shift + 1: Accesses the calibration submenu.
  • Shift + 3: Opens the arm calibration menu.
  • Shift + 4: Activates truck mode, adjusting weight measurement for larger vehicles.

Additional Features

  • Laser Activation: Press Shift + Laser to toggle the laser guide on or off.
  • Weight Minimization Mode: Press Shift + Match to optimize weight placement and minimize the amount of weight required.
  • Fine Mode: Press Shift + Roundoff to enter fine mode for increased balancing accuracy.
  • Automatic Hood Start: Press Shift + Hood Start to enable or disable automatic measurement when the hood is closed.
  • Unit Conversion: Press Shift + Ounce/Gram to switch between measurement units.
